ADHD Mood Misunderstood

My ADHD mood misunderstood.  Living with ADHD can be challenging, especially when it comes to sleep. For individuals like me, who struggle with both ADHD and perimenopause, oversleeping has become a daily battle. The consequences of oversleeping go beyond feeling groggy and tired; it can significantly impact our mood and overall well-being. In this blog post, I want to shed light on the connection between oversleeping and ADHD, and how it affects our emotional regulation.

Why does oversleeping affect ADHD?

When you have ADHD, your brain already has difficulties with focus, attention, and impulse control. Lack of sleep or oversleeping can exacerbate these symptoms and make it even harder to manage daily tasks. Oversleeping disrupts your natural sleep-wake cycle, leading to a feeling of grogginess and mental fog upon waking up.

For individuals with ADHD, this grogginess can be more intense, making it challenging to concentrate and stay alert throughout the day. It's like starting the day with a heavy weight on your shoulders, making it difficult to function optimally.

The impact of oversleeping on mood

One of the lesser-known consequences of oversleeping with ADHD is its impact on mood. Oversleeping can lead to a range of negative emotions, including irritability, frustration, and even depression. When you wake up feeling tired and lethargic, it's natural to feel more easily overwhelmed and emotionally dysregulated.

As someone who experiences emotional dysregulation, I understand how oversleeping can intensify these feelings. It becomes a vicious cycle: oversleeping leads to a low mood, which in turn affects your ability to manage your ADHD symptoms effectively.

Oversleeping can be a significant challenge for individuals with ADHD, especially when it comes to managing mood and emotional regulation. By understanding the connection between oversleeping and ADHD, we can take steps to improve our sleep habits and overall well-being.

Why is it unfair to be yelled at for your moods?

I often find myself getting yelled at due to my mood. This has caused a lot turmoil and distrust in my relationship. It can be incredibly frustrating when others don't understand or empathize with our moods. It's important to remember that our emotions are not always within our control. Just like we can't control the weather, we can't always control how we feel. Yelling at someone for their moods only adds fuel to the fire and makes them feel worse. It's unfair to expect someone to instantly change their mood simply because they are being yelled at.

What can we do to support others?

Instead of making someone feel worse about their moods, we should strive to be understanding and supportive. Here are a few ways we can do that:

1. Listen without judgment: Sometimes, all someone needs is a listening ear. Allow them to express their feelings without interrupting or criticizing.

2. Offer empathy: Let the person know that you understand how they feel. Validate their emotions and let them know that it's okay to feel the way they do.

3. Be patient: Remember that moods can fluctuate and change over time. Give the person space and time to process their emotions.

4. Provide resources: If appropriate, offer resources or suggestions that may help the person manage their moods better. This could include therapy, self-help books, or relaxation techniques.

Why is it important to avoid making someone feel wrong about their emotions?

When you are yelled at for a mood, you feel like your feelings aren't accepted. This only increases the feeling something is wrong with you. When we make someone feel wrong about their emotions, we are essentially invalidating their experiences. This can have a detrimental impact on their mental well-being. It's important to remember that everyone's emotions are valid, even if we don't fully understand or relate to them. By making someone feel wrong about their emotions, we are essentially telling them that something is inherently flawed about them. This can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, and low self-esteem.

Before getting upset with someone make sure you understand how ADHD can effect someone's mood.
